Kitchen Appliance Sizes and Clearances: Complete Planning Guide
Choosing kitchen appliances sounds pretty straightforward until you realize that the advertised size is only one small part of what actually has to fit. Your refrigerator doors need room to swing, your dishwasher needs somewhere to open, your oven needs enough space for you to stand in front of it, and suddenly those few extra inches around an island matter a lot.
The goal is not simply to make every appliance fit inside the kitchen. You want everything to feel comfortable when the appliances are actually being used, because that is when good kitchen planning really shows.

Start With the Appliances Earlier Than You Think
You do not necessarily need to buy your appliances before you start designing the kitchen, but you should have a pretty good idea of what you want. By the time your cabinet drawings are being finalized, having the exact appliance model numbers can save you from some very expensive adjustments later.
Two refrigerators can both be called 36-inch models and still have different depths, hinge requirements, handles, and ventilation needs. This is why I would never finalize custom cabinetry based only on the size listed in the appliance category.
Do Not Plan Around the Advertised Width Alone
When an appliance says 30 inches or 36 inches, think of that number as the starting point rather than the complete dimension. Doors, handles, hinges, trim, ventilation gaps, and installation clearances can all make the appliance occupy more space than that advertised width suggests.
This becomes especially important when cabinetry or an island sits close to the appliance. A difference of only a few inches can determine whether the kitchen feels generous or annoyingly tight every day.
Start With the Refrigerator
The refrigerator is usually one of the largest objects in the kitchen, so I like to place it early in the layout rather than squeezing it into whatever wall is left. Its width matters, but its depth and door movement often have an even bigger impact on how the kitchen feels.
A refrigerator directly across from an island can work beautifully because the island becomes a convenient grocery landing area. You just need enough space so someone can open the refrigerator and stand in front of it without completely shutting down the aisle.
Standard-Depth Refrigerators
A standard-depth refrigerator can be a great choice when storage capacity is your priority, especially for larger households that keep a lot of groceries at home. The downside is that the appliance may project noticeably beyond the surrounding counters and cabinetry, which can make it feel much larger once it is actually installed.
If your kitchen has wide circulation, that projection may not bother you at all. In a smaller kitchen, though, I would compare it carefully with a counter-depth option before giving up precious aisle space.
Counter-Depth Refrigerators
Counter-depth refrigerators are popular because they sit closer to the line of the cabinetry and can immediately make the kitchen look cleaner. They are especially useful when the refrigerator faces an island or sits somewhere highly visible from the living or dining room.
You usually trade some interior depth for that more integrated look. For many homeowners, that is a worthwhile trade because groceries can also be easier to see when they are not disappearing into a very deep refrigerator.
Built-In Refrigerators
Built-in refrigerators are much more architectural because the cabinetry is designed around the appliance rather than simply leaving a space for it. They can look incredibly seamless, especially when you use custom panels that make the refrigerator almost disappear into a pantry wall.
The trade-off is precision, because the opening, ventilation, panels, handles, electrical connection, and water supply all need to work with the exact appliance. This is definitely one of those decisions I would make before the cabinets go into production.
Refrigerator Door Swing Matters
A refrigerator can fit perfectly into its opening and still be frustrating if its doors cannot open far enough. This happens all the time when a refrigerator is pushed too close to a wall or tall pantry cabinet because nobody looked at the full door-opening diagram.
You want to be able to pull out interior shelves and crisper drawers without fighting the refrigerator door. That small filler beside the appliance may look like lost space on paper, but sometimes it is exactly what makes the refrigerator usable.
Refrigerators Beside a Wall
If your refrigerator sits at the end of a cabinet run, I would be very careful about pushing it right against the wall just to gain another inch of cabinetry. The door handle or hinge may hit the wall before the door reaches the position needed to access the interior comfortably.
The amount of clearance depends on the exact appliance, so this is where the specification sheet becomes more useful than a generic rule. A small filler can often solve the whole problem and make the installation look more finished at the same time.
French-Door Refrigerator Clearance
French-door refrigerators are convenient because each upper door is narrower than one large single door, which can help when you have an island nearby. The bottom freezer drawer still needs quite a bit of room to extend, though, so do not check only the refrigerator doors and forget about what happens below.
I like to imagine someone standing in front of the fully open freezer while another person is trying to walk behind them. If that situation already looks uncomfortable on the floor plan, it will feel even tighter once the kitchen is built.
Side-by-Side Refrigerator Clearance
Side-by-side refrigerators also use narrow doors, which can make them practical in tighter kitchens. Because both compartments extend the full height of the appliance, however, you still need enough opening angle to remove shelves, baskets, and freezer components.
This is especially important if one side sits against a wall. The refrigerator may open enough for everyday use but still become frustrating when you need to clean it or reorganize the interior.
Refrigerator Handles Count Too
It is easy to measure the refrigerator body and forget that the handle may project several inches farther into the room. In a generous kitchen this is barely noticeable, but in a tight aisle it can be the part of the appliance everyone keeps bumping into.
Recessed or integrated handles can reduce that projection, although I would still choose a handle that feels comfortable to use. After all, the refrigerator is one of the few things in your kitchen you may open dozens of times in a single day.
Refrigerator Height
Refrigerator height affects the cabinet above it, and this is another area where I would avoid designing the opening too tightly. A future replacement may be slightly taller even when the width remains similar, which can leave you with a refrigerator that almost fits but not quite.
At the same time, leaving a huge empty gap above the refrigerator usually makes the cabinetry look unfinished. The sweet spot is an opening that feels intentional now while still leaving a little practical flexibility for the future.
Now Look at the Range
Once the refrigerator is settled, the main cooking appliance is usually the next piece I want to understand. The range affects counter space, cabinetry, ventilation, backsplash design, electrical or gas planning, and the aisle where most of the cooking happens.
This is also where homeowners sometimes get caught in the idea that bigger automatically means better. A range should be large enough for the way you cook without stealing valuable countertop and cabinet space simply because a larger model looked impressive in the showroom.
A 30-Inch Range Works in More Kitchens Than You Think
A 30-inch range is popular for a reason because it gives most households plenty of cooking capacity without taking over the room. You can still find sophisticated gas, electric, and induction options at this size, so choosing a standard width does not mean choosing a basic kitchen.
The extra counter space you preserve can sometimes make a bigger difference to your daily routine than adding more burners. If you cook with two or three pans most of the time, there may be no reason to sacrifice another six inches of preparation space.
When a 36-Inch Range Makes Sense
A 36-inch range starts making more sense when you genuinely cook a lot and want a larger cooking surface. It also creates a stronger focal point, which can look beautiful beneath a proportionately sized range hood.
Just remember that those extra inches have to come from somewhere. You may lose a drawer base, reduce counter space beside the range, or need a larger ventilation setup, so I would make sure you are getting something useful in return.
Large Professional-Style Ranges
A 48-inch or larger range can be fantastic for someone who cooks heavily, entertains often, or genuinely uses the additional burners and ovens. For everyone else, it can become a very expensive way of giving up storage and counter space.
A large range also changes the scale of everything around it, including the hood, backsplash, cabinets, gas or electrical service, and working aisle. I would treat it as a major design decision rather than simply another appliance upgrade.
Range Depth Can Sneak Up on You
Ranges do not always align perfectly with the face of your cabinetry, especially professional-style models with substantial handles and controls. That extra projection matters when the island is directly opposite the cooking wall.
Measure from the part of the appliance that sticks out the farthest rather than the cabinet box behind it. That is the actual space your body will experience when you move through the kitchen.
Think About the Oven Door Open
An oven door may open perfectly and still leave the kitchen uncomfortable if there is nowhere for you to stand. You need enough space to step back, bend, and lift hot cookware without pressing yourself against the island behind you.
This is one of those things that is easy to miss in a pretty floor plan where every appliance is shown closed. Draw the oven open and suddenly you get a much more realistic picture of how the kitchen will work.
Range and Island Spacing
The aisle between your range and island is not just a hallway because it is an active working zone. Someone may be cooking at the range while another person opens an island drawer, walks behind them, or prepares food on the opposite counter.
You want that relationship to feel comfortable without placing the island so far away that the two work surfaces stop feeling connected. The best distance is the one that lets the kitchen breathe while still making it easy to turn around and use the island as your prep surface.

Slide-In and Front-Control Ranges
Front-control ranges create a cleaner backsplash because you do not have a tall control panel rising at the back of the cooking surface. This can make the range feel more integrated with the cabinetry and gives you more room to show off the backsplash behind it.
The exact range still needs to be selected before the countertops and cabinetry are finalized. Small differences in depth and side details can affect how cleanly it fits between adjacent cabinets.
Cooktops Give You More Flexibility
A cooktop separates the cooking surface from the oven, which can be wonderful if you want the oven positioned higher in a tall cabinet. It also lets you design the cooking zone more freely because the cooktop can sit within a long counter or sometimes within the island.
What you gain in flexibility, though, you give back in coordination. The cooktop body, electrical or gas connections, ventilation, drawers below, and separate oven location all need to be planned together.
Induction Cooktop Clearance
Induction cooktops look incredibly slim from above, but there is still equipment hidden beneath that beautiful glass surface. Before drawing full-depth drawers directly underneath, check how much room the cooktop body and ventilation requirements actually need.
You may still be able to have drawers below, which is one of the reasons induction can work so well in modern kitchens. They just need to be designed around the appliance rather than assuming the entire cabinet remains available.
Gas Cooktop Planning
Gas cooktops also need room beneath the countertop for the appliance body and connections. The cabinet underneath may look perfectly normal from the outside while having much less usable space inside than a standard drawer base.
Ventilation becomes an important part of this decision too. If the cooktop is on an island, I would think carefully about whether the mechanical and visual complications are worth moving the cooking zone away from the wall.
Wall Ovens
Wall ovens are one of those upgrades you really notice because you can place the oven at a much more comfortable height. They also free the cooktop from the oven, which gives you more flexibility in designing the cooking zone.
The catch is that the cabinet opening needs to match the exact wall oven very closely. This is not an appliance I would swap casually after the cabinet order is already finalized.
Single Wall Ovens
A single wall oven gives you lots of flexibility because you can use the cabinetry above and below for storage or other appliances. It can also be positioned at a very comfortable height instead of forcing the entire appliance stack upward.
I would always prioritize the user's reach over making every appliance line up perfectly in an elevation. A beautiful appliance wall is not successful if you need to reach too high every time you remove a hot pan.
Double Wall Ovens
Double ovens are wonderful for people who genuinely use two ovens, especially during holidays and entertaining. They create a tall appliance stack, though, and that means the upper oven can become uncomfortable if the entire unit is positioned too high.
Before approving the cabinet height, try a similar appliance in person if you can. Imagine lifting a heavy roasting pan out of the upper oven, because that tells you much more than simply admiring the display.
Wall Oven Door Clearance
A wall oven opposite an island needs the same kind of attention as a range. The door projects into the aisle, and you need room to stand in front of it while handling cookware safely.
This becomes especially important if stools are positioned directly behind you. You do not want everyone to leave the island every time someone checks dinner.
Microwave Placement Is Really About Height
Microwaves come in countertop, built-in, over-the-range, drawer, speed-oven, and combination formats, but the biggest everyday difference is often where you place them. A microwave that looks beautifully integrated can still be annoying if you have to lift a hot bowl down from above shoulder height.
I would choose the microwave location around the people who use it most. Convenience matters much more here than making one appliance stack perfectly symmetrical.
Built-In Microwaves
A built-in microwave can look very polished inside a wall of cabinetry. The important thing is remembering that the visible trim and the appliance body may have different dimensions, so the cabinet opening needs to follow the approved installation details.
Do not assume any countertop microwave can simply be enclosed inside cabinetry. Some are designed for built-in installation and others need airflow conditions that make that arrangement inappropriate.
Microwave Drawers
Microwave drawers are great when you want the main appliance wall to stay visually clean. They often live inside an island or base cabinet, which also puts hot food closer to a comfortable lifting height.
The drawer projects into the aisle when open, so location still matters. I would avoid putting it exactly where people constantly walk or directly across from another appliance everyone uses at the same time.
Over-the-Range Microwaves
An over-the-range microwave can be a smart solution when space is tight because one appliance provides both microwave cooking and ventilation. The challenge is finding a height that keeps the microwave accessible while still respecting the installation requirements above the cooking surface.
This is not an area where I would copy a dimension from someone else's kitchen. Use the requirements for your exact microwave and range, then make sure the final height works for the people who will actually use it.
Dishwasher Planning
Dishwashers are easy to overlook because they slide neatly beneath the counter and look roughly cabinet-sized when closed. The problem only becomes obvious when the door drops open across the aisle.
You need enough room not only for the door itself but also for someone to stand there while pulling the racks in and out. A dishwasher that technically opens but traps you against the island is not a good layout.
Keep the Dishwasher Near the Sink
The dishwasher usually makes the most sense beside the sink because the plumbing is simpler and the cleanup routine feels natural. Dishes move from the sink directly into the machine instead of traveling across the kitchen.
Either side can work, so choose the side that creates fewer conflicts with corners and storage. Sometimes moving the dishwasher from one side of the sink to the other improves the entire cabinet layout.
Be Careful With Dishwashers at Corners
A dishwasher sitting directly beside a corner can create one of those frustrating kitchen conflicts that does not show up until installation. When the dishwasher door is open, the drawers or doors around the corner may become completely inaccessible.
A small filler can sometimes solve the problem, which is why a few inches of apparently empty cabinetry can actually be very valuable. I would rather lose a tiny bit of storage than spend years fighting two doors that crash into each other.
Panel-Ready Dishwashers
A panel-ready dishwasher can make the kitchen feel incredibly clean because the appliance visually disappears. The cabinet panel, handle, toe kick, and dishwasher movement still need to be coordinated carefully, though, especially near corners.
Remember that the decorative pull becomes part of your aisle clearance too. A beautiful oversized handle that sticks into a narrow walkway may look less charming after you bump into it for the fiftieth time.
Range Hood Planning
A range hood is not something I would size by appearance alone. It needs to work with the cooking appliance, installation height, ductwork, cabinet design, and the way you actually cook.
Visually, I also like the hood to feel proportional to the range rather than tightly squeezed around it. A strong cooking wall usually looks more intentional when the range, hood, cabinetry, and backsplash are designed together.
Range Hood Height
The hood needs to sit within the installation range allowed for the selected hood and cooking appliance. Once you know that range, you can choose a height that feels comfortable and looks balanced in the room.
Installing it higher simply because you want a more open view may reduce how effectively it captures cooking air. This is one of those places where technical requirements should guide the design rather than being ignored for appearance.
Custom Range Hoods
If you want a beautiful plaster, wood, metal, or stone range hood, choose the ventilation insert before designing the decorative shell. The enclosure needs to give that equipment enough room for airflow, ductwork, lighting, and future service.
I always think of the ventilation insert as the appliance and the custom hood as the architecture around it. Designing the pretty part first and forcing the mechanical system inside afterward is backwards.
Under-Cabinet Hoods
Under-cabinet hoods are practical because they fit neatly beneath cabinetry and can be visually quiet. Just remember that ductwork may run through the cabinet above, which means that cabinet may not provide as much usable storage as it appears to on the elevation.
I would show that duct route in the cabinet drawings from the beginning. Otherwise someone may be surprised when their beautiful upper cabinet arrives and half of the interior is occupied by mechanical work.
Chimney Hoods
Chimney hoods create a strong vertical element over the range, which can make the cooking wall feel taller and more architectural. Ceiling height matters because the chimney cover still needs to reach or terminate gracefully at the upper portion of the wall.
This is also a good time to think about the backsplash. A chimney hood usually looks more intentional when the backsplash and hood are composed as one feature rather than designed separately.
Island Hoods
An island hood becomes a major visual object because you see it from almost every direction. That can work beautifully, but it may also interrupt views across an open-concept space.
If maintaining a clean sightline is important to you, keeping the cooktop on a perimeter wall may produce a better overall room. Sometimes the best appliance layout is the one that lets the architecture stay quieter.
Beverage Refrigerators
An under-counter beverage refrigerator can be a great way to keep guests and drinks away from your main refrigerator. Just make sure the appliance is actually intended for built-in installation if you plan to surround it tightly with cabinetry.
Ventilation requirements differ between models. A refrigerator that works perfectly when freestanding may not appreciate being squeezed into a cabinet opening with nowhere for heat to escape.
Wine Refrigerators
Wine refrigerators need the same kind of attention, especially when they sit beside a wall or tall cabinet. The door has to open far enough for the bottle racks to slide out comfortably.
That little detail is easy to forget because the appliance itself looks so compact. Always test the door movement, not just the width of the opening.
Built-In Coffee Machines
A built-in coffee machine can look fantastic within an appliance wall, especially when it lines up with ovens and other black-glass appliances. But you still need to think about refilling water, adding beans, removing trays, cleaning, and where you set the cup while you are using it.
A premium appliance should make mornings easier rather than adding extra steps. I would design the surrounding cabinetry around the actual routine, not simply around the appliance's front elevation.
Speed Ovens
Speed ovens are useful because they can handle microwave functions while also providing additional cooking modes. They are often stacked above a wall oven, which is where height becomes really important.
Remember that you may be taking hot liquids out of this appliance just like a microwave. If the speed oven is installed too high simply to make the appliance stack look elegant, it can quickly become uncomfortable.
Small Appliances Count Too
Your kitchen may technically have perfect clearances around every major appliance and still feel cluttered because the counter is covered with a toaster, coffee machine, mixer, air fryer, blender, and rice cooker. These small appliances should be part of the kitchen planning conversation too.
Decide which ones deserve permanent counter space and which can live in a pantry or appliance cabinet. You do not need to hide everything, but you do want enough clear countertop left to actually prepare food.
Appliance Garages
An appliance garage is a great solution when you want equipment nearby but do not want to look at it constantly. The cabinet still needs enough internal height and depth for the appliance to operate, not simply sit there with the doors closed.
Coffee makers are a perfect example because lids and water tanks often open upward. Measure the machine while it is actually being used before you decide the cabinet is tall enough.
Give Every Appliance Somewhere to Land
Every appliance works better when there is a convenient counter nearby. You need somewhere for grocery bags beside the refrigerator, hot cookware near the oven, dishes beside the microwave, and plates near the dishwasher.
These landing areas do not need to be enormous. They simply need to exist in the places where your normal routine naturally needs them.
Refrigerator Landing Space
An island near the refrigerator makes grocery unloading incredibly easy. You can place the bags down, then divide everything between the refrigerator, freezer, and pantry without carrying groceries all over the room.
A nearby perimeter counter works just as well. What you want to avoid is a refrigerator completely surrounded by tall cabinetry with nowhere close to set anything down.
Oven Landing Space
If you have wall ovens inside a tall cabinet bank, make sure there is a nearby counter where you can set a hot tray. Walking halfway across the kitchen carrying heavy cookware is not the kind of luxury anyone needs.
The island often becomes this landing area, which is another reason oven-to-island spacing deserves careful thought. Close enough to be useful but spacious enough to be safe is the goal.
Microwave Landing Space
A microwave also benefits from a landing surface, especially when you are removing hot liquids. If the appliance sits in a tall cabinet, the island or nearby counter can provide somewhere immediate to place the dish.
This detail matters even more when the microwave is above counter height. You do not want to lift a hot bowl down and then search for somewhere to put it.
Put Dish Storage Near the Dishwasher
One of my favorite ways to make a kitchen feel easier is simply to store dishes close to the dishwasher. Plates can go into a drawer beside the appliance, glasses can live in a nearby cabinet, and cutlery can sit directly across in the island.
Suddenly unloading takes half the time because you are not walking from one end of the kitchen to the other. That is the kind of planning you notice every single day.
Draw Every Appliance Open
Here is one of the easiest ways to test your kitchen plan: draw every appliance in its open position. Show the refrigerator doors, freezer drawer, dishwasher, oven, microwave drawer, and any cabinet drawers directly opposite them.
Now look at the space that remains. If the kitchen suddenly looks like an obstacle course, you have found problems while they are still cheap to fix.
Do Not Expect Everything to Open at Once
You do not need to design the kitchen so every door and drawer can remain open simultaneously without touching anything. That would often require much more space than is practical.
Focus instead on the combinations that happen naturally. The dishwasher and dish drawer may be open together, while the refrigerator and pantry are often used at the same time during grocery unloading.
Small Kitchens Need Appliance Restraint
In a small kitchen, oversized appliances can steal space much faster than you expect. A wider refrigerator may cost you a pantry cabinet, while a larger range may eliminate one of your best preparation counters.
Sometimes choosing a slightly smaller appliance makes the entire kitchen feel larger and more functional. I would rather have a well-proportioned kitchen than a huge refrigerator surrounded by six inches of usable counter.
Galley Kitchens Need Extra Attention
Galley kitchens can be incredibly efficient because everything is close together, but appliance doors extend directly into the central aisle. A dishwasher, oven, or refrigerator can temporarily block most of the passage if the spacing is tight.
That does not make the layout wrong. It simply means appliance depth, door swing, and placement matter even more than they would in a larger open kitchen.
Large Kitchens Can Go Too Far the Other Direction
A large kitchen gives you the luxury of space, but it also makes it easy to spread everything too far apart. You should not need to take ten steps from the refrigerator to the preparation counter simply because the room allowed it.
Keep the everyday food-storage, preparation, cooking, and cleanup zones reasonably connected. Secondary appliances can live farther away without weakening the main kitchen workflow.
Size the Island Around the Kitchen
It is tempting to start with the biggest island you can imagine and then arrange the kitchen around it. I prefer doing the opposite by establishing the appliance walls first and allowing the island to grow only as large as the remaining circulation comfortably allows.
A slightly smaller island with great aisles usually feels much better than a huge island that everyone has to squeeze around. Bigger is not automatically more impressive once you actually start living with it.
Appliance Handles Are Part of the Clearance
When you measure an aisle, measure to the part of the appliance that projects farthest into it. That may be a refrigerator pull, oven handle, or long decorative handle on a panel-ready dishwasher.
Those few inches can be surprisingly noticeable in a tight kitchen. They are real space, even if they do not appear as part of the appliance box on the plan.
Do Not Close Up Ventilation Gaps
Some small spaces around appliances may look unnecessary, but they often exist for airflow or installation. Refrigerators, microwaves, beverage coolers, ovens, and other appliances all have their own ventilation requirements.
Do not ask the installer to close those gaps simply because you want the appliance to look tighter. A perfect reveal is not worth interfering with how the equipment is designed to operate.
Coordinate Electrical Work Early
Your appliance list directly affects the electrical plan. Induction cooking, electric ranges, wall ovens, microwaves, dishwashers, hoods, refrigerators, and specialty appliances may all have their own circuit and connection requirements.
Share the actual specification sheets with the electrician before the walls are closed. Moving electrical after cabinets arrive is a much more expensive way to discover that the original location does not work.
Coordinate Gas Connections With the Exact Range
A gas valve that sits in the wrong spot behind the range can prevent the appliance from pushing fully back. The result may be a range projecting into the aisle even though the cabinet opening itself is correct.
Use the appliance installation drawing to locate the connection properly. This is such a small rough-in detail, but you will definitely notice it if it is wrong.
Plumbing Needs the Same Attention
Dishwashers, refrigerators with water dispensers, and certain specialty appliances need plumbing connections. You want those valves and connections accessible for installation and future service without interfering with drawers or appliance bodies.
Think beyond the day the kitchen is installed. Someone will eventually need to service the appliance, and they should not have to dismantle half the cabinetry to reach a water valve.
Flooring Can Affect Appliance Fit
Dishwashers can become trapped when new flooring raises the finished floor in front of them but does not continue beneath the appliance. This can make future removal surprisingly difficult because the countertop prevents the dishwasher from lifting over the higher flooring edge.
Think about finished-floor height before the cabinetry and appliances are installed. A little coordination here can make replacement much easier years from now.
Countertop Thickness Matters Too
A thicker countertop changes the relationship between the counter, range, cooktop, and under-counter appliances. A thin porcelain surface creates a very different condition from a heavy built-up stone edge.
This is another reason countertops and appliances should not be designed independently. The final work-surface height and appliance transitions need to feel intentional together.
Cabinet Fillers Are Sometimes Your Friend
I know fillers can feel like wasted space when you are trying to maximize every inch of cabinetry. But a narrow filler beside a refrigerator, dishwasher, or corner cabinet can be the reason those doors actually open properly.
I would happily give up a couple inches of theoretical storage to avoid a cabinet handle smashing into the wall every morning. Useful space is more important than maximum cabinet width.
Corners Need Special Attention
Corners are where appliance and cabinet conflicts love to hide. A dishwasher may block a perpendicular drawer, a refrigerator door may hit a pantry handle, or an oven may open into the path of another cabinet.
Draw every moving part before approving the layout. If two things want to occupy the same space, they will eventually find a way to prove it.
Think About Food Storage as One Zone
