As this year winds down, we catch a peek at the future of interior design in 2024. Let's embrace the adventure of predicting next year's trends and get ready to be bold, bright, and a little bit flashy!

As an experienced interior designer for over 15 years, I have observed numerous trends in interior design. These trends often come and go, with some being modern adaptations of classic styles and others being innovative ideas introduced by design experts, fellow designers, and homeowners.

I'm hoping this year's interior design trends will bring some serious fun and show off our top-notch creativity. So, no time to waste, here's my take on the 2024 interior design scene!

1) Sustainable and Ethically Sourced Finishes

The numero uno on the list (no doubt the biggest deal in home design and construction) are finishes or materials that are sustainable and ethically sourced.

We all know about sustainable materials, but when it comes to ethically sourced products or services, it means they were obtained in a fair and ethical way (no exploitation, no child labor, no unfair treatment, and the makers were paid a fair price).

Lots of manufacturers are getting creative and finding ways to make their products sustainable. They're using recycled materials to produce luxury vinyl planks, carpets, wallcoverings, and other finishes.

Designers are going all out to use eco-friendly and morally sourced finishes, furniture, furnishings, and home decor for their designs to save the planet and make people happy. Here are some examples of finishes that I reckon will be super trendy in terms of sustainability and their minimal impact on the environment.

2) Artificial Plants for Hectic Folks

Biophilic design is all the rage in interior design; it's been trending for ages! And with most people working from home, it's bound to stick around. But let's face it, not everyone has a green thumb or the time to tend to live plants.

Real-looking faux plants are the new wave for homeowners looking to bring a tropical flair and some greenery into their living space. The market is bursting with all sorts of faux plant options in different sizes and styles, so let your creativity run wild!

3) Fabrics that Go Bananas with Patterns

This year is all about being bold and loud. And when I say bold, I mean bold! This isn't for the tame when it comes to interior design. Fabrics with bold and unusual patterns are stealing the show this year.

Don't mix curves and straight lines if you're playing with patterns. But hey, geometric patterns in various colors (like patchwork) could totally work! Trust me, it's gonna be huge in 2024.

    4) Tile Designs Gone Wild

We've noticed some low-key patterns taking center stage in the tile universe this 2023; but for the upcoming year, we're spotting some bold patterns stealing the show. Prepare for geometric patterns (in all shapes and sizes), repetitive lines, and playful curves.

    5) Monochrome Madness

The majority of the 2024 color of the year from various paint brands leans towards the blue spectrum. These colors exude a vibrant energy and create a refreshing atmosphere in your interior space.

The colors extend to furniture, fabrics, rugs, and accent décor pieces. The hot new trend is choosing a base color, using it as a foundation, and adding shades of that color as accents to create a sleek monochromatic look with varying depths and textures.

    6) Multi-Functional Spaces

Working remotely isn't going anywhere, just like our makeshift home offices tucked away in the corners of our houses. With the need for extra space in our already cramped interiors (especially for those in condos), we're all getting crafty with our surroundings.

This year's fresh interior design trends involve tweaking furniture arrangements to cleverly incorporate areas for everyday home activities and workspaces. Limited space? No problem! Embrace the trend of versatile furniture, like tables that transform into workstations.

    7) Shiny and Sparkling

You may find it hard to believe, but I think gold could be so last year (how redundant, right?). Chrome and glossy blacks are where it's at for 2024.

These shiny and reflective finishes will be the standout fixtures in the kitchen, bathrooms, and other spaces where we need door and cabinet handles and lighting fixtures. You can mix and match metal finishes like chrome, gold, black, and brass if you want a more modern vibe.

    10) Combining Old and New

To finish up the interior design forecast for 2024, it's all about mixing the old with the new! This wave began when it became easy-peasy to sell and buy pre-loved furniture, decor, and other home goodies online or in marketplaces.

Interior design tastes are always changing. In my kooky opinion, a fresh and funky twist on eclectic style will be all the rage in 2024. People are getting wild and crazy, mixing the old with the new!

These experiments are obvious in the living space, where we can mix and match furniture pieces, and in the bedroom, where we can rock a fresh bed and pair it with vintage side tables.

Interior design trends, like fashion and even food, ebb and flow. Yet, trends hold weight as they lay the foundation for what's to come and stay in the design industry. When upgrading your home's interior, choose a timeless style (the magic word for the best interior style) and always keep in mind your goal of creating a joyful sanctuary.
